About Runic Script

Runes are the characters of various alphabets used by Germanic and Norse peoples from around the 2nd century CE. The most well-known system is Elder Futhark, consisting of 24 characters, which gave way to Younger Futhark (16 runes) during the Viking Age, and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc (33 runes) in England.

The runic alphabet likely developed from North Italic scripts, possibly influenced by Etruscan or early Latin alphabets. The oldest known runic inscriptions date to around 150 CE. The word "rune" itself derives from an Old Norse root meaning "secret" or "whisper."

The 24 Elder Futhark Runes: Named after its first six characters (F-U-TH-A-R-K), Elder Futhark was in use from approximately 150 to 800 CE across Scandinavia, Germany, and England.

Uses: Runes were carved into stone (runestones), wood, bone, metal, and other surfaces. Warriors inscribed runes on weapons and shields to invoke divine protection or victory.

Modern Revival: Today, runes enjoy widespread interest in Norse paganism, Asatru spirituality, fantasy literature, tattoo art, and popular culture.
